Credit mailer questions, answered
What are automotive credit mailers?
Direct-mail pieces sent to car buyers prescreened against your credit criteria using bureau data. Instead of blasting a ZIP code, you mail people who are financeable and in-market. Each piece goes out as a Firm Offer of Credit under the FCRA and can be personalized with the recipient’s likely payment, vehicle, equity, and offer.
What is a "firm offer of credit," and do my mailers have to be one?
A Firm Offer of Credit is a real, prescreen-based offer the recipient can accept if they meet the criteria you set. When you market to consumers using their credit data, the FCRA generally requires the mailer be a firm offer — that’s how credit mailers are designed to work, and what lets you use bureau prescreen data to target the right buyers. Educational, not legal advice — confirm specifics with your provider and counsel.
Does mailing a prescreen offer affect the customer's credit score?
No. Prescreening uses a soft credit inquiry, and soft inquiries don’t affect the consumer’s credit score — they aren’t visible to lenders the way a hard inquiry is. You can identify and reach qualified buyers by mail without pulling a hard inquiry or asking for a Social Security number up front.
What credit data can I target with a credit mailer?
You can build the audience from bureau prescreen data — FICO band or tier (subprime, near-prime, prime), estimated equity, current payment and rate signals, recent auto-credit inquiries, and lease-maturity indicators. That’s how a credit mailer reaches in-market buyers who will qualify, instead of everyone in a radius.
Can the mail piece show a personalized payment, vehicle, or offer?
Yes. Using variable-data printing, each piece can carry the recipient’s estimated payment, a likely vehicle, their equity position, and a specific offer — instead of a generic “Dear Valued Customer.” Personalized, credit-informed offers consistently outperform untargeted mail because the recipient sees an offer that fits their situation.
How do I know a credit mailer actually drove a sale?
Through match-back attribution. We match your sales and responses back against the file we mailed, so you can see which drops produced deals — real attribution against the mailed list, not a guess from a coupon code. Because the same record loads to your CRM, your BDC can follow up with the exact people who were mailed.
